What is apple pie spice mix?

Apple pie spice mix is a blend of cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice, and a dash of pepper. When added to apples, it will taste like you are eating apple pie! Add it to your favorite apple recipe, or sprinkle it on ice cream or oatmeal. It will brighten the winter months!

What about cardamom and ginger?

The great thing about homemade apple pie spice is that you can start with this recipe as a base and add other spices as you like. Some bakers like to add cardamom and/or ginger, depending on their personal preference. Cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice are the foundational ingredients of apple pie spice.

Whole versus ground spices?

For this recipe, make sure all your spices are ground. You can either buy ground spices at the store, or if you have a mortar and pestle, you can grind whole spices so they are freshly ground.
