DIY Starburst Tile Rug

Turn your basic rug into a bold statement piece n just four easy steps! This project is so inexpensive too - I completed it in two hours or less and spent less than $25. The only things I needed to purchase were the rug, the stencil, and the paint. You might already have a rug lying around that you want to spruce up, knocking even more dollar signs off!

I used this rug from World Market and a stencil from Amazon. The paint is Deco Art Americana Acrylic Paint in warm white. After I chose the white paint I thought it would also look really cute with a fun paint color. What do you think? What color would you do?

I have it in a high foot traffic area in my entryway and so far so good, but I will give you an update as time passes.

How to Make a DIY Starburst Tile Rug

Supplies

  • Rug

  • Measuring Tape

  • Blue Painter’s Tape

  • Sharpie

  • Stencil

  • Acrylic Paint

  • Container for Paint

  • Paint Brush

  • Blow Dryer (optional)

Directions

Step One - Mark the center of the rug by measuring its length and width. Then measure to half the length and half the width, and place a piece of tape with an X on it right there. Bulls eye! Mark your center of the lengthwise sides to help keep the pattern straight as you paint the tiles across.

Step Two - Place the middle of your stencil over that X. Make sure to line up your edges so the stencil is straight! Tape down the stencil with painter’s tape.

Tip - I found that taping the corners of the stencil down rather than the whole thing was a little faster and saved some tape. It also helped me avoid dabbing paint over the edge where the stencil design was really close to the edge.

Step Three - Dip your paint brush in paint and dab the paint on. Dabbing the paint rather than brushing will help you keep the paint from going underneath the division lines.

Tip - When I pressed the stencil down with my fingers as I painted, the lines turned out crisper. If you are worried about getting the acrylic paint on your fingers you can wear gloves. It washes off super easy though!

Step Four - Pull the Stencil off and blow dry the fresh paint for about 30 seconds. It should dry pretty quickly.

Tip - I like to wash my stencil in between each use - this keeps it from getting clumpy and the lines will turn out crisper, and it only takes a minute or two longer.

Repeat until you’ve covered the whole rug!

Note - For each side, I taped down the stencil and only painted half, right up to the edge of the rug.

I love using stencils because it doesn’t have to turn out perfect and that is part of their charm. It did turn out pretty darn good though!

Have a great week!
