Easy DIY with a Photo Frame and Old Calendars
I thought I'd keep it simple today and share this easy DIY with a photo frame and old calendars. I use this hack often for pictures and such that don't fit into standard picture frames. For instance, if you have any old calendars lying around piling up dust this project is the perfect solution to put them to use. This project works with a number of different materials. Things like construction paper, fabric, or even cane webbing (if you're feeling adventurous!) will work.
I recently got this fortune from an old fortune teller machine at a vintage store in Santa Cruz. Usually I think these are silly and this one is no different, yet I also found myself feeling inspired by this one. Is that cheesy? Oh well! Anyways, I decided to frame it on my desk as a constant reminder to work hard and keep going. Maybe there is something special you'd like to frame but it doesn't fit into a standard sized matte?
Okay, my biggest tip is DON'T overthink it. Do what you need to do to get the job done - it should only take about five minutes if you follow my process.
SUPPLIES
Old or outdated calendar (I had this Rifle Paper Co. saved in my stash)
Picture frame (I used this one from Ikea, but this is great for thrift store photo frames that don't have a matte in them!)
Scissors
pencil
STEPS
Start out by disassembling the picture frame and cleaning the glass (or faux glass in my case) with soap and water and then a splash of glass cleaner. Dry the glass.
Locate a pretty spot you want to use in your calendar. I flipped through the pages and held the fortune ticket up to several pages to see which design I liked best.
I was drawn to the contrast of the dark blue option. Once you find a spot you are happy with, place the glass over it. I placed the item I want to frame on top of the glass to ensure I liked the symmetry of the background.
Next, use a pencil to trace around the edge of the glass. I knew the matte my picture frame came with would cover the top edge, so I didn't worry too much about it being a smidge short. If you don't have a matte already, be sure that your calendar paper completely covers the surface area of the glass.
Remove the glass and use scissors to cut the shape out.
Reassemble the contents placing the glass first. Then matte (if your frame had one), then the item you are framing, your calendar cut out, and finally the frame backing. In other words, the new backing should be the last thing you place in the frame before the frame backing.
My frame closed tightly, however if you find your frame to be loose and not holding things in place, you can secure the item you are framing in place by using a little bit of glue or tape to stick it to the calendar cutout.
And you're all done! If you try this let me know how it goes. Thanks for reading!
