What are Flourless Peanut Butter Blossoms?

Flourless peanut butter blossoms are a simple peanut butter cookie with a chocolate kiss pressed into the center. The main ingredients are peanut butter, granulated sugar, egg, pure vanilla extract, and chocolate kisses. Truly a Christmas classic, these cookies can be found on almost every cookie plate you’ll receive during the Christmas season.

Recipe Tips

  • The cool thing about these cookies is that they crack and open like a blossom when you press the chocolate kiss into them, so don’t worry if they are not very cracked fresh out of the oven.

  • The bottom of the chocolate kiss melts and fills the hole that is created when you press the chocolate kiss into the cookie. To retain more of the kiss shape, don’t press them very far into the cookie. For a more melted chocolate kiss, press them farther into the cookie. I pressed mine about halfway down and I’m really happy with how they retained their shape at the top but where melty at the bottom!

  • I recommend doubling the recipe if you are making these for a party or to add to Christmas cookie plates.

Recipe Variations

  • Other nut flavors - swap peanut butter for almond butter or any other type of nut butter.

  • Brown sugar - reduce granulated sugar to 1/2 cup and add 1/2 cup packed brown sugar for a richer flavor.

Can I use chunky peanut butter to make flourless peanut butter blossoms?

Yes! I prefer creamy peanut butter in these cookies so that is what I used, but if you prefer crunchy peanut butter you can use that as well. The important thing to note is that you want to use no stir peanut butter. If you use the kind that has a layer of oil at the top and needs to be mixed, it may separate and the bake might not turn out properly. You could end up with flat or runny cookies and that is no fun.

Can I make flourless peanut butter blossoms vegan?

Yes! The only non-vegan ingredient in these cookies is the egg. To make an egg substitute, mix 1 tablespoon of baking soda and 1 tablespoon of vinegar in a bowl and add it to the mixture in place of the egg.

How to Store Flourless Peanut Butter Blossoms

Store flourless peanut butter blossoms at room temperature in an air tight container for up to five days.

You can also freeze flourless peanut butter blossoms easily. Just place the uncooked dough balls (rolled in sugar) in an air tight freezer container and store in the freezer for up to three months. No need to pre-freeze these on a baking sheet since they are rolled in sugar, they will not stick together. Remove from the freezer and bake the frozen dough (not thawed) as directed.

How to Make Flourless Peanut Butter Blossoms

Ingredients

  • 1 cup no stir peanut butter

  • 1 cup granulated sugar, plus 2 tablespoons

  • 1 egg

  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

  • 24 milk or dark chocolate kisses (I used dark)

Directions

Remove the chocolate kisses from their foil and set aside. Preheat the oven to 350℉. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Add peanut butter, sugar, egg, and vanilla extract to a bowl and mix until well combined.

Scoop dough into 1 1/4 inch balls and roll them in the additional two tablespoons of sugar. Place them on a baking sheet about 2” apart and bake for 10-12 minutes or once the tops lightly crack.

Remove the cookies from the oven and immediately sink a kiss about halfway down into the center of each cookie. Let cool on a wire rack for about 1 hour to set.
