What is a Hot Toddy?

A hot toddy is a hot tea cocktail that is often used to soothe a soar throat or help with a cold. The ingredients include black tea, whiskey, lemon, ginger, honey, and water. A hot toddy does not always include ginger in the list of ingredients, however I like the kick that ginger adds to it. Ginger can also help settle an upset stomach, so brownie points!

Recipe Tips for Hot Toddy

Try using frozen pre-grated ginger (I buy them in cubves at Trader Joe’s where they have them in the frozen section). Peeling ginger can be a real nightmare and this will make your life so much easier!

If you are using frozen ginger, make sure the water is boiling hot in order to melt the frozen ginger block.

I also recommend straining the hot water mixture through a mesh strainer once everything has dissolved but before you add the teabag for a smoother texture - the ginger can be really flakey.

Recipe Variantions for Hot Toddy

You can try this with a variety of tea flavors. One of my favorite non-traditional teas to use for a hot toddy is a cinnamon spice tea, it takes it to a whole new level!
